GHCP Splinter Meetings at the Annual Meeting of the European Geoscience Union

Meeting 1: Extreme Geohazards: Reducing Disaster Risk and Increasing Resilience
April 14, 2015 at 13:30-15:00 in Room Y3
Meeting 2: Geohazards Community of Practice: Extreme Geohazards
April 14, 2015 at 15:30-17:00 in Room Y7

Scope and Objectives.

Meeting 1:

With support from the European Science Foundation (ESF), the Geohazards Community of Practice (GHCP) of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) has prepared a White Paper on the risk associated with low-probability, high-impact geohazards. These extreme events are in general not sufficiently accounted for in risk management, although the potential impacts of these events on modern society could lead to global disasters or catastrophes. The White Paper aims to increase the awareness of the risk associated with extreme geohazards as a basis for a comprehensive risk management and its recommendations focus on the scientific, social, and governance challenges that need to be addressed in order to reduce the high risk associated with these events. We will present the main conclusions and recommendations of the White Paper and discuss with the audience specific steps towards disaster risk reduction and increased resilience for the case of extreme geohazards.

Meeting 2:

The invited GHCP members will review the status of research focusing on extreme Geohazards and discuss the contents of a special issue on this topic.
